IN THE MATTER OF CELEBRATING THE RESOLUTION NO. 2007/274
INSPIRATIONAL LIFE AND CONTRIBUTIONS
OF CHAPLAIN DR. HAMILTON T. BOSWELL
WHEREAS, Chaplain Dr. Hamilton T. Boswell,who resided in Pt. Richmond,was born in Texas in 1914;
moved to Los Angeles as a boy; moved back to Texas to get his B.A. degree from Wiley College in
Marshall; moved back to Los Angeles to get his M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Southern
California; Los Angeles; and, began his career in the clergy at St.Johns Methodist Church in Los
Angeles; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Hamilton BoswelldarlYved"in San;Franclsco in 1947 to assume the pastorship of Jones
,T
Methodist Church in the heart of the Fillmore District; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Hamittbu Boswell jomed`oihers workmg_fro ii the pQ6:61i iandy black Fillmore District
to fight for the-rights.of.Bay"Area"African-Amerieans;,and •.

WHEREAS, Dr Hamilton BoswelDI`as a passionate advoca't'e f6r�educatton°and c6himunity involvement;
and
WHEREAS' 'Dr. Hamilton,Boswell founded the-Jones Ivlethodlst Credit Union and the,Jones Memorial
Homes, the first federally-financed senior citizen housing in Sari Francisco; and
WHEREAS, Dx:°,FIamilton Boswell`received numerous awards and conu &indattons;,includin the coveted
Civic Award of the Silver Spur for his.-work jn senior housing,the Freedom Award by`the NAACP

Chinch conference presidingover the Contra.Costa$County and AIameda Countyilutlsdiction until

WHEREAS;:Dr Hamilton.Boswell.carne out of rettternent in1`•984 to serve as-the`"Chaplain to the
Califotnta AssembWfor ten years,;the longest"tenure ofnan Assembly Chaplain,and
CnWHEREAS, Dr. 'Hamilton,BoswellV as Pastor Emeritus at'Jones'Memorial. Umted Methodist Church
inspired andassisted numerous young men and women for years„ministering via the telephone in
his elder years, Ind`co authored with.his daughter Eleanor" a book of prayers called Prayers for
Willie; gib.
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Contra=Costa County Board of Supervisors honors
the amazing life and contribution
