DECLARING APRIL 23-29, 2006 AS
SAFETY SEAT CHECKUP WEEK
IN CONTRA COSTA COUNTY
WHEREAS, the number one preventable cause of death and injury of children and young adults is the
automobile collision, and
WHEREAS, 160 child passengers under the age of sixteen were killed and 17,754 were injured in
automobile colhsions m Cahfotniain2004; and
WHEREAS, up,'�to 71%�of those childten._would be alive today if they had been properly restrained in
crash tested safety seat`s, boosters, or safety belts; and `
WHEREAS; infants and young children are.noi.capable of>mtiating action to use proper restraints and are
not rotected'ade uatel b automatic belts or a>r'bags, and'
p q Y Y .
WHEREAS, only about 60% oftehildren to-thig age. group are*protected by restraint'use ON EVERY
RIDE, and
WHEREAS, crash tested'safety seats are moderately_pr iced and'm4dely<avatlable for purchase at retail
stores and atiow"cogt frorri clai safety seatdlstribution programs throughout Cahfoinia; and
WHEREAS, the•State of California has ruled that until children are six years#of age or-sixty pounds, they
must be,restramed m safe seats,or boosters m the�backbseat when r>d7ng'm�motor vehicles, and
that all other occupants�must use;property restrained Ln safety seats or safety belts; and
WHEREAS, Safet BeltSafe,U.S.A� has been dediw Y hildren from injury or
death while betng4ran9poited Ln a motor vehicle,
NOW,THEREFORE;BE IT RESOLVED that'the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors does
hereby declare the week of April 29 as` afetySeat Checkup Week in Contra Costa County.
