RESOLUTION HONORING THE RESOLUTION NO. 2004/545
LAFAYETTE TOWN HALL THEATRE
FOR RECEIVING THE SPECIAL COMMISSION
AWARD AT THE ARTS & CULTURE
COMMISSION 9T" ANNUAL AWARDS CELEBRATION
WHEREAS, in 1911 a group of leading citizens, including several merchants, formed the Lafayette
Improvement Club (LIC), One of the first pieces of business was to construct a building which could
be used for community meetings and social events, and
WHEREAS, in 1913 Frank and Rosa Ghiglione deeded a property to the LIC and donated $200
towards building casts. With other financial contributions and labor donated by the citizens of
Lafayette, a building was completed in May, 1914; and
WHEREAS, in 1941, LIC was reorganized under a new constitution and became today's Lafayette
Improvement Association (LIA). Town Hall continued to be used by many organizations in many
ways. In 1941theatrical performances were launched by the Lafayette Playshop. Their opening
night was December 3, 1941, the eve of the U.S. entry in World War ll. During the next four years,
the building's use was devoted to the war effort; and
WHEREAS, live theatre returned to Lafayette in 1.947, and in 1955 the Dramateurs began
performing. From 1956 until 1386, a local rvpp eMerl: bd:.lt alresidents with a show called "The
Laf-Frantics'; and
WHEREAS, the Drarnateurs reorgartiked as the gown Hall Theatr$CbMpart .In 1991 and continues
to flourish today. The Town I°.a01:.h#�ltre won the sheltie Award for:the fest re action in Contra
Costa County three times titin 1902 and 1955.
