RESOLUTION NO. 2004/4"
WHEREAS twenty percent of adults—or one in five--- will experience a psychiatric episode
during their lifetime that is severe enough to require treatment, and many more have problems that
prevent them from enjoying their lives;and
WHEREAS due to recent scientific advancements in the understanding, diagnosis, and
treatment of psychiatric disabilities, millions of Amerieans are reclaiming full and productive lives;
and
WHEREAS consumer advocacy and self-help programs,with the underlying philosophy that
the best helpers are often these who have experienced similar problems,provide emotional support
and practical help for promoting recovery, an ongoing process of self-directed healing and
transformation,among their members;and
WHEREAS it is recognized that families and significant others play an important supportive
role in the recovery process and are a vital resource in assisting their loved ones with psychiatric
disabilities;
NOW,THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED THAT THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS OF CONTRA
COSTA COUNTY proclaims October 3-9,2004 as"Mental illness Awareness Week",and requests the
support of Contra Costa residents and organization in this effort to increase awareness of psychiatric
disabilities and to promote the understanding that, through proper treatment and rehabilitation,
individuals are able to resume productive, satisfying lives.
Passed by unanimous vote of the Board Members present on this Fifth clay of October,2004
