IN THE MATTER OF DECLARING RESOLUTION NO. 2001/205
JUNE 19, 2001 AS "DR. JOSE RIZAL DAY'
IN CONTRA COSTA COUNTY
WHEREAS, DR. JOSE RIZAL is a national hero of the Philippines who was born in 1861 and died
in 1896. Dr. Rizal is recognized as a versatile genius, poet, novelist, opthalmic surgeon, inventor,
sculptor, painter, playwright, educator, entomologist, businessman, reformer, linguist mastering
22 languages, and most of all a patriot and martyr who died for his country. His heroism blazed
the path to Philippines' independence.
WHEREAS, DR. JOSE RIZAL with his writings and philosophy, sought through peaceful means to
end over three hundred years of Spanish colonial rule, dedicated his life to championing human
rights; and
WHEREAS, DR. JOSE RIZAL is celebrated by the Filipino-American community this year with the
theme of "The future beckons. We await you, 0 youth!" The 11'h annual birthday celebration is
on June 23, 2001 at the Hercules Senior Center. It is made possible by the state library's
Partnership for Change, which allowed the Pinole Library to house the largest collection in the
United States of Dr. Rizal's literary work; and
WHEREAS, DR. JOSE RIZAL's enduring legacy of social reforms through non-violence parallels
that of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Mahatma Gandhi.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of Contra Costa County
hereby declare June 19, 2001 as:
PASSED by vote of the Board of Supervisors members present this 19th day of June, 2001.
