DATE: May 15, 2001
SUBJECT: Resolution for Bike to Work Day 2001
SPECIFIC REQUEST(S) OR RECOMMENDATION(S) & BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION
RECOMMENDATIONS
Adopt a resolution (See Exhibit A) proclaiming May 17, 2001 Contra Costa County
Bike to Work Day.
FISCAL IMPACT
None to the County.
BACKGROUND/REASONS FOR RECOMMENDATIONS
The objective of Bike to Work Day is to encourage County commuters to try bicycling
to work on this occasion by offering publicity, a drawing for prizes, and energizer
stations. Once they try bicycling, it is hoped that many participants will continue to
commute by bicycle one or more days a week. Bicycling is a healthful, nonpolluting,
energy-saving mode of transportation that offers great dividends to both the user and
the community.
Contra Costa County is organizing several events to promote Bike to Work Day and
encourage county employees and the general public to participate. Energizer
stations providing refreshments and information to Bike to Work Day participants will
be located in downtown Martinez and at the Pleasant Hill BART station. A Bicycle
Commuting Clinic featuring instruction on safe cycling and commute practices will be
conducted at the Pleasant Hill BART station.
