BARRY, AICP ; Costa COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT DIRECTOR County N DATE: May 15, 2001 SUBJECT: Resolution for Bike to Work Day 2001 SPECIFIC REQUEST(S) OR RECOMMENDATION(S) & BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION RECOMMENDATIONS Adopt a resolution (See Exhibit A) proclaiming May 17, 2001 Contra Costa County Bike to Work Day. FISCAL IMPACT None to the County. BACKGROUND/REASONS FOR RECOMMENDATIONS The objective of Bike to Work Day is to encourage County commuters to try bicycling to work on this occasion by offering publicity, a drawing for prizes, and energizer stations. Once they try bicycling, it is hoped that many participants will continue to commute by bicycle one or more days a week. Bicycling is a healthful, nonpolluting, energy-saving mode of transportation that offers great dividends to both the user and the community. Contra Costa County is organizing several events to promote Bike to Work Day and encourage county employees and the general public to participate. Energizer stations providing refreshments and information to Bike to Work Day participants will be located in downtown Martinez and at the Pleasant Hill BART station. A Bicycle Commuting Clinic featuring instruction on safe cycling and commute practices will be conducted at the Pleasant Hill BART station. PASSED AND ADOPTED ON May 15, 2001, by a unanimous vote of the Board members present. I hereby certif.
