SUBJECT: "Tuberculosis Awareness Month"
SPECIFIC REQUEST(S)OR RECOMMENDATION(S)&BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION
IN THE MATTER OF PROMOTING RESOLUTION NO. 96/ 287
The Month of July as
"Tuberculosis Awareness Month"
WHEREAS 4,675 cases of active tuberculosis disease were reported in California in 1995 representing a 34%
increase since 1985, and 103 cases were reported in Contra Costa County, representing an increase of 72% since
1985.
WHEREAS the purpose of the program is to reduce the incidence of and to control TB by educating the
public regarding TB, motivating individuals to respond actively to advise on understanding the features of the
disease, and creating an environment in which individuals who suspect they have the disease will readily come forth
and seek treatment; and
WHEREAS Tuberculosis in California is being fueled by the HIV/AIDS epidemic, immigration, and such
poverty-associated factors as crowded housing, homelessness, incarceration, malnutrition, and use of drugs; and
WHEREAS household members (including children) and other close contacts including employees of health
care, correctional, and other institutions who share air with infectious tuberculosis patients, are at risk of becoming
infected with the tuberculosis bacterium and progressing to active disease; and
WHEREAS potentially lethal strains of tuberculosis bacterium that are resistant to treatment with many
currently available tuberculosis drugs have been identified in California; and
WHEREAS The Department of Health Services Tuberculosis Control Unit,California Tuberculosis Controllers
Association, and the American Lung Association of California in cooperation with various federal, local and private
agencies, have developed an education/awareness program to promote tuberculosis prevention measures; and
WHEREAS during the month of July, individual citizens, government agencies and private entities are joining
to encourage the widespread implementation of proven tuberculosis control measures targeted toward those persons
at highest risk:

COSTA COUNTY, CALIFORNIA, PROCLAIMS JULY 1996 AS
"Tuberculosis Awareness Month"
