THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS OF CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, CALIFORNIA
Adopted this Order on May 7 , 1996 , by the following vote:

in the Workplace )
The following policy is adopted by the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors in its capacity
as the Board of Supervisors of Contra Costa County and as the governing board of each of the
special districts or other public agencies of which it is the governing board, to prohibit violence
in the workplace.
POLICY PROHIBITING VIOLENCE IN THE WORKPLACE
1. Violent or threatening conduct at the workplace of any kind by employees or others,
including but not limited to clients, visitors, and persons on business, whether directed
against an employee, a coworker, a manager or other person, is prohibited. This includes,
but is not limited to:
a. Striking, punching, shoving, grabbing, slapping or assaulting others.
b. Fighting or challenging others to fight.
c. Engaging in dangerous or threatening horseplay or hazing.
d. Making verbal, written or implied threats of violence.
e. Stalking (which includes, but is not limited to, repeated following, calling or
harassing of another).
f. Bringing a gun, knife or any weapon of any kind into a County building or work
site (including an outdoor work site) or a County vehicle, even if the employee or
other person has a permit to carry a concealed weapon (this subdivision does not
apply to peace officers who have been authorized to carry weapons, or to
employees' knives used as tools in the course of County business).
2. Violent or threatening conduct by an employee is grounds for disciplinary action up to and
including termination.
3. Anyone who is the victim of any violent or threatening conduct, or who observes such
conduct (whether the perpetrator is a County employee or a non-employee), should
immediately report the conduct to his or her supervisor. All such reports will be
investigated.
4. The County Administrator is authorized to adopt such regulations as he may in his discretion
deem appropriate to implement this policy.

SUBJECT: Policy prohibiting violence in the workplace
SPECIFIC REQUEST(S) OR RECOMMENDATION(S) & BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION
Adopt the attached Board of Supervisors' Resolution establishing a
policy prohibiting violence in the workplace. A working group of
county staff, operating with support and direction from 'the Risk
Manager, has developed the attached policy prohibiting work place
violence .
Given the serious impact of workplace violence in this day and age,
.the policy is recommended to provide - appropriate guidance to
employees, department heads, and the general public .
