JIM CLEARY for his Outstanding ) RESOLUTION NO. 951317
Service to the Community
WHEREAS, Jim Cleary has successfully led Tosco Refining Company, headquartered in
Concord, as President and Chief Executive Officer since June 1990; and
WHEREAS, during his time in Contra Costa, Jim has become a leading force in our community,
having donated Tosco's resources and his personal talents to many different efforts; and
WHEREAS, in September, Jim will be leaving the county to take over as Senior Vice President
of the Tosco Corporation based in Stanford, Connecticut, and his presence and input will be
sincerely missed here in Contra Costa; and
WHEREAS, among his many devotions to the community, Jim has been a staunch supporter of
the United Way, serving as Interim Chair and Vice Chair of the Agency Relations Committee and
on numerous other committees; and
WHEREAS, for his involvement in the United Way, Tosco was selected for the United Way's
Grand Award for Corporate Philanthropy in 1994; and
WHEREAS, under Jim's leadership, the men and women of Tosco have determined to serve
children, education, substance abuse prevention, and persons with special needs as a matter of
company principle; and
WHEREAS, Tosco's Education Partnership Program, where 250 volunteers working on company
time in over 90 schools, particularly highlights Jim's innovative and compassionate leadership
style; and
WHEREAS, the list of contributions, donations, and awards for Jim Cleary and Tosco's service
are vast; and the citizens of the county are extremely fortunate and grateful for Jim's tremendous
dedication and hard work toward improving the quality of life in Contra Costa County.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors honors JIM CLEARY
for his outstanding service to the community and wishes him much success and happiness with
his new position and his new home.
PASSED AND ADOPTED ON July 18, 1995, by a unanimous vote of the Board members
present.
