IVj&REAS, the Nationalgfero of the(Philippines, (Dr. Jose RizaC, was born on the 19th of
June in 1861, in?G2lam6a, (Philippines;and
'iNjfiB4ZEAS, Dr. Rizal was considered to rank among the world's geniuses -- he was an
anthropologist, botanist, businessman, economist, educator, engineer,farmer, historian, horticulturist,
linguist, mathematician, novelist, naturalist, painter, physician, poet, philosopher, psychologist,
sculptor, sociologist, and zoologist, among many things, but more than these, he was a patriot, Fiero,
andmartyr, and
WEMEAS, while in Europe during the late 1880's, (Dr. gjzal wrote novels and articles
calring for reforms in government and defending the rights of the Filipinos to a better government and
the recognition and respect for their human rights,freedom and justice;and
10MUAS, on June 20, 1892, Dr. Rizal returned to the(Philippines to continue his peaceful
campaign for reforms organizing the Liga Filipino to unite the Filipinos. On July 6, 1892, he was
imprisoned for unjustifluible reasons and then banished. Ife was held responsible for the outbreak of
the(Philippine 1�volution on August 23, 1896, and returned to prison After a mock trial 6y military
court, he was sentenced to death by a firing squad and died as a martyr to the cause of human rights
andfreedom on December 30, 1896;

Celebration of the Birthday of Dr.Jose Razal on Saturday,June 17, 1994, at the(Pinole Library. The
theme of this year's event is "volunteerism" and will highC9ht the contributions of outstanding
Filipino Americans in our community,

Contra Costa, CaCfornia, does hereby proclaim, Saturday, June 17, 1994, as "Dr. Jose Ozal Day"in
Contra Costa County to commemorate the birthday of the NationalMero of the Philippines.
