as ADELAIDE SILVA DAY in Contra Costa ) RESOLUTION NO. 941200
County in Honor of Her 100th Birthday )
WHEREAS, Adelaide Angelina Solmi (Lida) was born on April 21, 1894, and has been a life-
long Contra Costa County resident; and
WHEREAS, when she was six months old, Lida's family bought a 125 acre ranch in Pacheco,
part of which is now Buchanan Field Airport; and
WHEREAS, the ranch produced hay and grain, and Lida's family also ran a store/saloon in
downtown Pacheco. The store was located where Diamond Syl's is today; and
WHEREAS, Lida attended Pacheco Grammar School and Mt. Diablo High School. She and her
friend, Lisa DiMartini Hook, used to take turns driving their horse and buggies to school; and
WHEREAS; when Lida wanted to attend Heald Business College in Oakland, she went to stay
with a friend in Richmond so she could take the street car to school. She took stenography and
bookkeeping classes and graduated in April 1916; and
WHEREAS, Lida had a prosperous career. She worked as a secretary for the county sheriff, a
law firm, the county tax collector, and eventually at Avon for the Associated Oil Co. (now
Tosco); and
WHEREAS, Lida met Manuel, her husband, at a dance in Pacheco. Manuel served the Army
in World War I; and upon his return, the couple was married on September 24, 1919; and
WHEREAS, for the past 73 years, Lida has lived and raised her family in Martinez.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE ITRESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors declares April 21, 1994,
as ADELAIDE SILVA DAY in Contra Costa County in honor of her 100th birthday. We thank
Lida for sharing the history of her life with us and wish her continued happiness.
PASSED AND ADOPTED ON April 19, 1994, by a unanimous vote of the Board members
present.
