On May 20, 1993 , claimants filed their claims against the nursing and administrative staff for failure to provide medical treatment which resulted in the death of Jerry Bond, Sr. on February 10, 1993, while he was incarcerated at the Contra Costa County Jail in Martinez, California. On December 27, 1993 , claimants discovered that the staff at the county jail had been receiving advice from some unknown health care professionals. On February 7, 1994, claimants learned for the first time . that the advice county jail staff had received with respect to treatment of Jerry Bond, Sr. had been coming from physicians at Merrithew Memorial Hospital, including Dr. Ingrid Bellwood. Because claimants did not discover this negligence until recently, this claim for medical malpractice was not included in the original claim. Attached to this request are additional claims on the part of the four claimants. The date and place of- the circumstances giving rise to this claim are : February 10, 1993 Contra Costa County Jail in Martinez, California. 5 . The circumstances giving rise to this claim are as follows : Claimant' s father Jerry Bond, Sr. was an -inmate in the Contra Costa County jail in Martinez . On Sunday, February 7, 1993, Jerry Bond, Sr. became ill with a fever and diarrhea. He became severely dehydrated, and his blood pressure began falling rapidly. The nurses on duty were advised by doctors at the County Hospital (Merrithew Memorial Hospital) to give the inmate Kaopectate and to have him drink fluids. The doctors, conduct fell below the standard of care in the community in that they did not require that the inmate be seen and treated by a physician or be brought in to the hospital . By February 10, 1993 , Mr. Bond was gravely ill and his blood pressure was by then so low that he was in serious condition. Despite life-threatening vital signs, the nurse at the County Jail was not told by the County Hospital to have Mr. Bond transported to a hospital where he could be examined by a physician. Mr. Bond was dead by mid-morning. His heart had stopped as a result of severe dehydration and arrhythmia. 6 . The injuries sustained are : The claimant has sustained financial injuries through the death of his father, as well as loss of support and companionship. 7 . The names of the public employees causing these injuries are : Dr. Ingrid Bellwood and other unknown doctors. B . The claim for damages, as of the date of this claim, is : $500, 000 . 00 . 9 . The basis of computation of the above damages is as follows : Approximately $4, 000 for burial expenses; $200, 000 for loss of society, comfort, and support; $200, 000 for loss of companionship and emotional support .
