HomeMy WebLinkAboutRESOLUTIONS - 03221994 - 94-180 THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS OF CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, CALIFORNIA IN THE MATTER OF: PROCLAIMING THE MONTH OF RESOLUTION NO. 94/180 . APRIL, 1994 AS "INCREASE THE PEACE - STOP THE VIOLENCE MONTH" IN CONTRA COSTA COUNTY WHEREAS, violence in Contra Costa County. as throughout the United States, has reached epidemic proportions; and WHEREAS, violence encompasses a range of intentionally injurious acts including murder, domestic violence, assault, child abuse, sexual assault, and suicide; and WHEREAS, firearm injuries were the leading cause of injury deaths to Contra Costa County residents in 1992, nearly double the number of motor vehicle related injuries; and WHEREAS, from 1988 to 1990 firearm injuries were the leading cause of death for children in the 10 through 14 year age group (36%) , and the second leading cause of death for teens age 15 through 19; and WHEREAS, the costs of violence create an unnecessary burden on health and criminal justice services, the average national per person cost of hospitalization related to treating a firearm injury being $33, 159; and WHEREAS, a 1992 study of one local hospital revealed a total of 125 persons were. seen for gunshot wounds, initial charges for which totaled $467,012, 66% of which was public funds; and WHEREAS, the causes of violent behavior are extremely complex and reducing violence requires implementation of a broad spectrum of strategies, from individual education to policy and environmental changes; and WHEREAS, numerous local community agencies, civic and religious organizations, businesses and individuals continue to dedicate their efforts toward the reduction of violence, despite severe budgetary constraints; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT BY THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS OF THE COUNTY OF CONTRA COSTA RESOLVED THAT: The Board opposes all forms of interpersonal violence; and Q The Board recognizes efforts of organizations and individuals throughout Contra Costa County to reduce and prevent violence; AND BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED THAT: Q The month of April, 1994 is PROCLAIMED "Increase the Peace - Stop the Violence Month" through Contra Costa County.
