IN THE MATTER OF RESOLUTION NO.94/114
Commending the Students,Parents and Staff at
Laurel Elementary School in Oakley for their
Successful Earthquake Relief Project
WHEREAS,the students,parents and staff at Laurel Elementary School in Oakley organ-
ized a successful Earthquake Relief project to assist earthquake victims in Southern California;
WHEREAS,the day after the 6.6 earthquake rocked Southern California,teachers dis-
cussed earthquake preparedness in their classrooms and described the devastation to Southern
California. This prompted young Cody Chivers and some of his friends to ask Cody's dad,Bill
Chivers, PTA Vice President, how they could help;
W]HFREAS,with the school principal's approval,Bill Chivers, organized an Earthquake
Relief Project with the assistance of many students,parents and school staff at Laurel Elementary
School. After the project appeared in the local newspaper, donations began pouring in and organ-
izers filled over 500 moving boxes of food,blankets, clothing and other miscellaneous items,for
transport to Southern California by the Salvation Army. Western Truck School who provided a
truck for the unexpected overflow of donations.
WHEREAS,donations came from outide the school community as well; including a truck
full of articles from Bay Point and three pickups full of items were donated by St.Anne's Church in
Byron;
WHEREAS,this_project provided the students with valuable lessons about disaster plan-
ping and promoted the community spirit of helping others in need.
NOW,THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED THAT the Board of Supervisors commends the
PTA Vice President Bill Chivers,Laurel School Principal Anne Allen, and the students, parents
and staff at Laurel Elementary School in Oakley for their unselfish and civic-minded efforts to
assist the earthquake victims of Southern California and congratulates them on a successful project.
