OF
CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, STATE OF CALIFORNIA
In the Matter of Commemorating )
CALIFORNIA PEACE OFFICERS' ) RESOLUTION NO. 91/271
WEER )
The tragedy of a fallen officer affects many Lives--families,
friends, and co-workers. Each year the California Peace
Officers ' Memorial Committee sets aside one day for remembering
the brave men and women whose lives ended in the line of duty.
In 1970, under the encouragement of the Peace Officers Research
Association of California (PORAL) (of which the Contra Costa
County Deputy Sheriff 's Association [DSA] is associated) , the
California State Senate followed the federal government' s lead
and officially declared May 15 as Peace Officers ' Memorial Day
and the week in which May 15 occurs as Peace Officers ' Week.
In 1976 and 1986, respectively, once more under the persuasion of
PORAC, the State Legislature passed resolutions--both times, to
erect a memorial. The first memorial was unveiled in 1977 and
hangs just outside of the Governor's office. It is a huge book
bound in leather with a large sword on either side and contains
the hand-lettered names of more than 1,000 state and local
officers who have been killed in the line of duty since 1850.
The second memorial is a 13-foot tall, three-figured bronze
statue in Capitol Park. PORAC has since become the caretaker of
the memorials, and to oversee this huge task, the California
Peace Officer' s Commission was formed.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors
wishes to commemorate CALIFORNIA PEACE OFFICERS' WEER and to
acknowledge the dedicated efforts of PORAC and the DSA. We
extend our deepest sympathies to the families, friends, and
co-workers of the 13 slain officers whose names are being added
to the memorial during this year' s service.
