Congressman George Miller for )
his many years of service to ) Resolution 911263
Contra Costa County )
WHEREAS, Congressman George Miller has recently been elected to Chair the
powerful U.S. House of Representatives Committee on the Interior; and
WHEREAS, Congressman George Miller has been a leading spokesman for water policy
reform and for the environment in the Congress; and
WHEREAS, as chairman of the Subcommittee on Water, Power and Offshore Energy
Resources, Mr. Miller exposed selenium contamination in Kesterson reservoir and
stopped plans to build a canal to drain its poisoned waste water into the Delta;
and
WHEREAS, Mr. Miller won approval for environmental and cost savings reforms on
Western irrigation projects that have saved taxpayers in excess of $1 billion;
and
WHEREAS, Mr. Miller led the congressional investigation into the Exxon Valdez oil
spill disaster in Alaska and wrote the oil spill law that improves navigation
safety and holds shippers responsible for paying for clean-ups; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Miller secured authorization and funding to expand the John Muir
Historic Site in Martinez, California; and
WHEREAS, having spent eight years as the first chairman of the House Select
Committee on Children, Youth, and Families, Mr. Miller has become widely
recognized as the leading spokesman for children in the Congress, and has won
enactment of legislation including child care, foster care and adoption reform,
family violence, education of the handicapped and the Women, Infants, and
Children's supplemental nutrition program (WIC) .
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of Contra Costa County
commend Congressman George Miller III for his many years of service to the people
of this county, state and country; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of Contra Costa County
congratulate Congressman Miller on his numerous accomplishments and his recent
ascendancy to the Chair of the Committee on the Interior.
