HomeMy WebLinkAboutRESOLUTIONS - 05211991 - 91-323 IN THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS OF CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, STATE OF CALIFORNIA In the Matter of Proclaiming ) May 20-27, 1991 as "Buckle ) RESOLUTION NO. 91/323 Up, Contra Costa County Week" ) WHEREAS, the Contra Costa County Health Department's Prevention Program has secured 4-year funding from the Office of Traffic Safety to reduce Contra Costa County residents' morbidity and mortality rates associated with non-use of motorcycle helmets, seat belts and child car passenger safety seats; and WHEREAS, every year over 43, 000 people are killed in automobile collisions and the resulting economic losses exceed $74 billion annually; and WHEREAS, motor vehicle collisions are the leading cause of death and permanently disabling injuries for individuals under the age of 44; and WHEREAS, less than 50 percent of Californians regularly wear safety belts; and WHEREAS, the National Highway Traffic Safety Commission has set a goal of increasing safety belt use to 70 percent by the end of 1991; and WHEREAS, research shows that the proper use of lap and shoulder safety belts can reduce the risk of serious injury and death by at least 57 percent, and that the proper use of child passenger safety seats can reduce the risk of death to children by at least 71%; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of the County of Contra Costa, California hereby PROCLAIMS May 20 - 27, 1991 as "Buckle Up, Contra Costa County Week" and ENCOURAGES all Contra Costa County residents to buckle up whenever they are in a vehicle, to insist that their passengers buckle up, and to safely secure their infants and young children in approved child passenger safety seats. PASSED by unanimous vote of the Board members present on this twenty-first day of May, 1991 .
