CONTRA COSTA COUNTY,CALIFORNIA
IN THE MATTER OF RESOLUTION NO. 91/299
Declaring May 28, 1991, as
Sri Chinmoy Peace Run Day
in Contra Costa County
WHEREAS,the Sri Chinmoy Oneness HomePeace Run'91 is history's longest running relay,covering
25,000 miles on a route that includes more than 70 countries on seven continents, with a 5,500 mile route
through 48 contiguous states of the United States of America, and special teams being sent to Alaska and
Hawaii; and
WHEREAS,Peace Run'91 is a dynamic expression of the spirit of humanity's progress,cooperation,
and continued self-transcendence,allowing thousands of participants to express their personal aspirations for
world peace by carrying the Peace Torch; and is free of charge to all participants, and is not associated with
any political cause; and
WHEREAS,Peace Run'91,will pass through cities and countryside,and be joined by thousands of U.S.
citizens of all ages,including residents of Contra Costa County,who will carry the torch,thereby encouraging
physical fitness,contributing to the development of happy,healthy,and harmonious individuals,and making
a stronger Nation; and
WHEREAS, the Peace Run '91 will bridge the cultural and social barriers, and the ideological and
demographic boundaries that separate nation from nation,thus celebrating the invincibility of the human spirit
and its determination to help overcome the obstacles to lasting peace among the peoples of the earth; and
WHEREAS,Sri Chinmoy,founder of the Sri Chinmoy Marathon Team and noted advocate of peace,
who has twice been commended by the President's Council of Physical Fitness for his contribution to sports
in America, has organized Peace Run '91 as a public service in which participation is the only fee; and
WHEREAS,Peace Run'91 torch relay runners will pass through the county on May 28, 1991;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors
hereby proclaims May 28, 1991, as Sri Chinmoy Peace Run Day in Contra Costa County, extends hearty
greetings to the torch relay runners and encourages all citizens of Contra Costa County to honor and recognize
this important historic event.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors designates Supervisor Tom Torlakson,
who will join the torch relay runners as they pass through our communities, to serve as the county's official
greeter.
PASSED by unanimous vote of the Board Members present on this 14th day of May, 1991.
