HomeMy WebLinkAboutRESOLUTIONS - 04091991 - 91-207 IN THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS OF CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, STATE OF CALIFORNIA IN THE MATTER OF ) Honoring Mr. Thomas Long on being) named "Humanitarian of the Year" ) by the Easter Seal Society of ) Contra Costa/Solano/Napa Counties) RESOLUTION NO. 91/ 207 WHEREAS, Mr. Thomas Long was born in Covelo, California, and graduated from the University of California at Berkeley in 1932; and WHEREAS, in 1938 , Mr. Long and his brother, Joseph Long, founded Longs Drug Stores and, within fifty years, built it into one of the five hundred largest businesses in the United States; and WHEREAS, Mr. Long, who has lived in Alamo since 1950, has contributed greatly over the years to many charitable interests, including the John Muir Medical Center, the Regional Center for the Arts, Longs Theater and the School of Pharmacy at the University of the Pacific and the UC Berkeley band; and WHEREAS, Mr. Long has been a member of the University of the Pacific Board of Regents, was a University of California, Berkeley Fellow in 1972 , and was named the Walnut Creek Chamber of Commerce businessperson of the year in 1981; and WHEREAS, in 1982 , Thomas Long established Camp Lisa, the first totally accessible camping site for the disabled within a California State Park, in the Plumas-Eureka State Park near Johnsville; and WHEREAS, in October, 1990, the administration of Camp Lisa was taken over- by the Easter Seals Society and 1991 will be the first year that the facility will be a full-time summer camp for the disabled; and WHEREAS, the Easter Seals Society of Contra Costa/Solano/Napa Counties has named Thomas J. Long "Humanitarian of the Year for 1991" for his many years of community contributions and will honor him with a dinner on April 11, 1991. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Board of Supervisors of Contra Costa County THANKS Mr. Thomas Long for the efforts he has made to enrich the lives of the disabled through the establishment of Camp Lisa and the lives of others through his many other benevolent contributions and hereby COMMENDS Mr. Long on being named "Humanitarian of the Year. " PASSED AND ADOPTED by unanimous vote of the Board members present on this 9th day of April, 1991.
