IN THE MATTER OF )
Proclaiming July 16, 1989 as ) RESOLUTION NO. 89/448
Port Chicago Memorial Day )
WHEREAS, Monday,July 17, 1989 is the 45th anniversary of the Port Chicago explosion
in which 320military and civilian personnel of the S.S.E.A.Bryan died with the resulting destruction
of the Quinault Victory; and
WHEREAS,The United States Navy Armed Guard Veterans of World War II have sponsored
the construction of a monument to commemorate this tragedy and memorialize those who died;and
WHEREAS, The monument, which will be placed at the site of the approaches to the pier
which was also destroyed in the explosion and fire,will be dedicated by the Armed Guard Veterans
of World War II and the Naval Weapons Station Concord on Sunday, July 16, 1989 at 10:30 A.M.
NOW THEREFORE BE IT BY THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS OF THE COUNTY
OF CONTRA COSTA,RESOLVED: That the Board of Supervisors recognizes this tragic event
which touched the lives of many Contra Costa County residents, and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED: That the Board of Supervisors expresses its appreciation
to the United States Navy Armed Guard Veterans of World War II for their leadership in permanently
memorializing these 320 innocent military and civilian individuals, and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED: That the Board of Supervisors proclaims Sunday,July 16,
1989 as Port Chicago Memorial Day in Contra Costa County in commemoration of the explosion
of the S.S. E.A. Bryan and in tribute to the 320 innocent lives which were lost.
I hereby certify that the foregoing is a true and correct copy of any order entered on the minutes
of said Board of Supervisors of the date aforesaid.
