HomeMy WebLinkAboutRESOLUTIONS - 04111989 - 89-216 IN THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS OF CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, STATE OF CALIFORNIA In the Matter Supporting the Child Investment and RESOLUTION NO. 89/.216 Security Act } WHEREAS, more than 36 million people are living below the poverty line throughout the United States; and WHEREAS,, the number of children living in poverty has doubled in the last two decades so that one-fifth of our children are . lost to poverty every year; and WHEREAS, young children who live in poverty are particularly vulnerable to the effects of hunger, ill health, and illiteracy; and WHEREAS, our country cannot afford the economic consequences of this terrible human tragedy which is estimated to cost the United States $240 billion in lost productivity and foregone taxes just from the high incidence of school dropouts; and , WHEREAS, Contra Costa County is only able to serve approximately 25% of the people who qualify for Head Start programs due to a lack of federal funding; and WHEREAS, a new study of Contra Costa residents reveals that poor people in the county have greater health problems including higher rates of pregnant teens who receive little or no prenatal care; and WHEREAS, this same study finds that poorer residents also have lower rates of disease prevention due to fewer immunizations; and WHEREAS, less fortunate children throughout the county would benefit significantly if programs like Head Start, WIC, school immunization and perinatal services were expanded; and WHEREAS, Congressman George Miller has joined in introducing "The Child Investment and Security Act" as a tangible means of directing governmental resources to help stem the tide of economic injustice which threatens our nation's children; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of Contra Costa County endorses The Child Investment and Security Act; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the Board be directed to send copies of this resolution to Contra Costa County's Congressional delegation and to President Bush.
