The resulting condition is known to the medical community as Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. Fetal Alcohol Syndrome occurs once in every 750 births nationally and is the second most frequest birth defect in the United States. The citizens of Contra Costa acknowledge that alcohol and drug abuse problems are a destructive force contributing to family stress, crime, vandalism, unemployment, absenteeism, child abuse, vehicular accidents, and other concerns throughout our communities and that these problems cost the people of Contra Costa County an estimated $225 million per year. In order to improve the quality of life for families, their children and all who live and work in our county, the Alcohol and Drug Abuse and Pregnancy Task Force invites all citizens of Contra Costa County to join together this year in a campaign to change the conditions that support the inappropriate use of alcohol and the illegal use of drugs. Only with the support of all schools, churches, health educators, professionals and neighborhood groups initiating programs, will citizens recognize the enormity of this problem and assume an active role toward its solution.
