March 15, 1987 to be ) RESOLUTION NO. 87/137
Dora Benton Day, Recognizing )
Her Retirement )
Dora Benton is recognized today for her years of dedication and con-
tributions to the citizens of our County.
Her career began in 1949 writing a neighborhood column for the then
weekly Concord Transcript entitled "Pleasant Living in Pleasant Hill." In 1952,
Dean Lesher bought the Green Sheet and offered Dora the position of Pleasant
Hill Editor. She wrote her column from home between household chores and taking
care of her two boys and three girls. Dora left the Green Sheet in 1954 to work
two days a week as the Assistant Editor of the Pleasant Hill News, a weekly
newspaper. In 1955, Pleasant Hill News was sold and Dora went on to work for
George and Clif Moore who had purchased the Concord Transcript, then the largest
newspaper in Contra Costa County. She took the Women's Editor post with the
understanding that she would try to see if she could handle a full-time job and
still be a good homemaker and mother. Twenty-seven years later, in May 1982,
she was still there when the Concord Transcript .closed its doors. She then
rejoined the staff at the Contra Costa Times.
Dora has been recognized and honored for her contributions. Her pro-
fessional awards include: two top Awards of Excellence from Contra Costa Press
Club; first media award by California Association for Mental Health; Merit Award
for "Best Women's Interests" coverage from the California Newspaper Publishers
Association; and permanent placement in the Marquis National Biography File, for
which her name was selected from "Who's Who in America and Canada" and "Foremost
Women in Communication."
Although her professional life was very full, Dora still had time to
participate as President, Regional Officer, and now Life Member of Soroptimist
International of Concord, offices in Pleasant Hill PTA's, Pleasant Hill Civic
Council, and member of the Steering Committee of the Concord Pavilion.
NOW THEREFORE IT IS RESOLVED by the Board of Supervisors of Contra
Costa County that Dora Benton is COMMENDED for her years of service through the
media to the citizens of Contra Costa County.
