WHEREAS Michael John Vukelich, Sr. was born and raised in
Richmond where he has lived all his life, and where he and his wife
raised their five children; and
WHEREAS Mike began his career in the nursery business in 1950
as an employee of a retail nursery business and began to grow plants at
home on his day off which led to his interest in the wholesale nursery
industry; and
WHEREAS Mike started his own wholesale business in 1956 and
was its only full time employee until 1960, his business prospering
until the droughts of 1976 and 1977, when he had to destroy 20 million
plants, and the 1982 flood in North Richmond which destroyed his entire
operation, forcing him to file bankruptcy; and
WHEREAS Mike firmly believes that he builds on adversity and
that adversity is a time for opportunity, it is no surprise that he
recovered from this set-back to form a new company called "Color Spot
Nursery" which by 1986 sold more flowering plants than any other nursery
in the United States; and
WHEREAS Mike has been an active member of the community,
participating on committees for the Wildcat/San Pablo. Creek Flood
Control Project and the North Richmond Bypass, plus serving as a
Director for the Richmond Neighborhood Housing Services, as President
