IV. BACKGROUND
Governor Deukmejian proclaimed the week of April 15-20
"Earthquake Preparedness Week" and the Board of Supervisors on
March 5, 1985 issued a confirming resolution, in which residents
were urged to obtain information and take action to prevent or
minimize injury to themselves and their property. To this end,
many Earthquake Preparedness efforts were undertaken in this
county and statewide.
Among the largest-scale of the activities held in this county
were those made possible by the Bank of America, Region 3510, the
Diablo Chapter of the ARC, and employees of Contra Costa County.
The Bank of America authorized special funds to provide for the
printing of 125,000 pamphlets "Family Disaster Plan and Personal
Survival Guide", and donated the time of 60 volunteers to take a
Red Cross Course in Safety & Survival in an Earthquake, then to,
go to local elementary schools to make a brief presentation (with
the county volunteers) and distribute the earthquake literature.
