HomeMy WebLinkAboutMINUTES - 05062008 - C.20 C714 yy L9:�, e� eomv_�, eax IN THE MATTER OF HONORING RESOLUTION NO.2008/294 OAK,GROVE MIDDLE SCHOOL ON ThE OCCASION OF ITS 50TH ANNIVERSARY,APRIL 30,200 WHEREAS, Oak Grove Intermediate School opened its doors on October 27, 1958, serving a student population of Seventh and Eighth Graders;and WHEREAS, the first Principal of Oak Grove Intermediate School, Joe Hauner, served from 1958 until his death in 1972;and WHEREAS,the second Principal,Bill Smith, served from 1972 until his retirement in 1982,when the Board of Education honored Mr.Smith with the`Best in District for Parent Communication';and WHEREAS,Sandra Buck served as Principal from 1982 through 1984;and WHEREAS, in 1985, under Principal Mark O'Brien, sixth graders_arrived, prompting the school to change its name to Oak Grove Middle School;and WHEREAS,from 1986 through 1987 John Damolian served as Principal;and WHEREAS, Dr. Audrey Wagman became Principal in 1988, implementing more.hands=on, active learning projects;and remained until she retired in 2002;and WHEREAS, Oak Grove Middle School began its emphasis on diversity during the 1990's with Multi- Cultural Career Days, which brought in a wide variety of speakers:.- This proud tradition continues today with the annual Multi-Cultural Celebration, with support from the Monument Corridor community;and WHEREAS, Oak Grove Middle'School was recognized as a California Distinguished School in 1996, and was accepted as.a member of the Bay Area School Reform Group in 1997;and WHEREAS;Lorie O'Brien served as Principal from 2002 through 2005,followed by current Principal Terry McCormick;and WHEREAS,a Mariachi Band was added to the school music program in 2003;11�01. WHEREAS,Oak Grove Middle School has been a leader in Middle School education, with block schedules allowing for longer class periods and a wide variety of exploratoty classes to expose students to many curricular areas, including inusic, art, drama; metal- shop, wood' shop,_ computers, and home economics;and WHEREAS, Oak Grove Middle School was in the first group of schools in Mt. Diablo Unified School District to be designated a Building Effective School Together school;and WHEREAS, Oak Grove Middle School is proud to,:have among its distinguished alumni seven times Olympic Gold Medal swimmer Mark Spitz', NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors hereby congratulates and honors the Administration, Faculty, Staff, and Students Grove Middle School, on the occasion of its 50°i anniversary.
