(District V) FINANCIAL IMPACT The Library will provide$100 of in-kind support to produce promotional flyers. BACKGROUND The Pittsburg and Bay Point Libraries request grant funds to present preschool child safety workshops at both locations, in partnership with the Family Stress Center. These workshops will provide resources and information to parents and their children that will help them develop skills to increase their safety in a variety of situations. The workshops will be followed by an informal early literacy playtime, during which library staff and parents can discuss how to help children develop early literacy skills, and the children will have a positive library experience. The library will also purchase books and materials on child safety to update and expand the library's current collection. CONTRA COSTA CHILDREN'S IMPACT STATEMENT Many of the early literacy skills require parents to interact with their children by singing, playing, talking, and creating. By providing books and information, the library can assist parents in helping their children develop these early literacy skills. The child safety workshops provide an occasion for parents to talk and play with their child, and thus practice some of the early literacy skills. This program supports the community outcome of Children Ready for and Succeeding in School. The subject of the workshop, child safety, also supports the community outcome of Families that are Safe, Stable and Nurturing because they teach parents and children how to empower themselves in order to better cope with difficult situations that may arise. Knowledge of these skills helps parents and their children feel safe. Describe the problem or opportunity you want to address with your one-time project? (How and why did you choose this project?) In the booklet, Personal Safety for Children: A Guide for Parents, produced by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, statistics show that there were approximately 52,000 "non-family abductions" in 1999. The booklet goes on to state that parents can arm their children with skills to avoid or deal with unsafe situations. Parents want more information on helping their children develop these skills. For example, in the late summer of 2007, a patron approached the library for resources to help her young daughter deal with a traumatic situation involving a stranger. Library staff assisted the patron in locating books and resources, and Marian Partridge, Pittsburg Community Library Manager, used Friends of the Library funds to hire the Family Stress Center to present a workshop on child safety. During the workshop, parents and young children worked through a series of role-plays that taught them how to empower themselves. The response from the community was tremendous, and several people asked when the next workshop would be held. 2. Describe the project your group plans to do? When and where will the project take place? With this project, the Library will offer a series of the Family Stress Center's child safety workshops at the Pittsburg and Bay Point Libraries. There are two workshop sessions in the series, and each session lasts thirty minutes. At the end of the second session, participants will be able to ask questions and share concerns with the instructor. Following each session of the workshop, there will be a literacy playtime and refreshments. During the playtime, children and their parents will have an opportunity to play with toys that reinforce early literacy skills. This playtime will give library staff a chance to distribute early literacy information to parents and to demonstrate ways in which parents can incorporate early literacy skills into their children's every day lives. During the second session, each workshop participant will receive a book recommended by the Family Stress Center. The book giveaway serves two purposes: one is to give parents a reminder of the information they learned at the workshop, and the other is to help build the family's home library and provide them with some material they can use to practice early literacy skills with their children. The library will also update and expand the children's collection with materials on safety issues such as abuse, bullying, and strangers. These resources will be available for community use. The following is an approximate timeline for the project: Summer 2008 • Compile a list of materials to order for the Bay Point and Pittsburg Libraries • Order the child safety materials for the libraries' collections • Order the Family Stress Center's recommended book for the workshop participants • Schedule the two-part workshop with the Family Stress Center (one at the Pittsburg Library and one at the Bay Point Library) • Develop a survey that will be used to get feedback from participants Fall 2008 • Prepare and distribute press releases and flyers to advertise the event • Conduct the workshops in Pittsburg and Bay Point (the workshops will take place on two consecutive Saturdays) Family-Friendly Community Grant FY 2008-2009 2 Due Friday,May 9,2008 no later than 12:00 noon First 5 Contra Costa, 1485 Enea Court, Suite 1200, Concord, CA 94520 (925)771-7300 • www.firstfiivecc.org JIFIRST5 FAMILY-FRIENDLY COMMUNITY GRANTS CONTRA COSTA FY 2008-2009 CHILDREN AND FAMILIES COMMISSION 3. Describe in detail who will be involved in carrying out the project and what will they do? Becky Nielson of the Pittsburg Library will coordinate the project. Becky and Carolina Montufar of the Bay Point Library will research and order materials on child safety for the libraries. Becky will work with the Family Stress Center to schedule workshops for the Pittsburg and Bay Point Libraries, and will create a brief survey for evaluation purposes. Becky will also order the Family Stress Center recommended book for workshop participants. Carolina will purchase refreshments for the workshops at Bay Point, and Becky will purchase refreshments for Pittsburg. Becky Nielson and/or Marian Partridge, Pittsburg Community Library Manager, will be at the workshops at the Pittsburg Library to direct the event and distribute information on early literacy, while Carolina Montufar and/or Geneva Moss will lead the event at the Bay Point Library. 4. Describe in detail how you will conduct outreach to the participants for this project? In order to increase awareness of the project, Becky and Carolina will send press releases to local papers such as the East County Times and the Pittsburg Press. They will also create a bilingual flyer to distribute to preschools, schools, and childcare centers as well advertise the event in the library with signs. The event will also appear online via the Library's web-based calendaring software. S. Describe how you will know if your project is successful? How will your community be a better place? We will distribute a brief survey at the beginning of the first workshop and at the end of the second workshop to see if participant's felt their knowledge of child safety increased after participating in the workshop. During the playtime, we will informally ask parents which activities and suggestions for implementing early literacy skills at home are most helpful and realistic to them. Also, adding more materials on child safety topics to the libraries' collections will provide more resources for the public to use when they seek information on the topics. Describe your history of providing literacy services for children 0 to 5 years? The Pittsburg and Bay Point Libraries provide a variety of books and materials appropriate for children ages 0 to 5. The libraries strive to include programming such as storytime that promote and encourage early literacy skills. Pittsburg Library offers weekly storytimes as well as a monthly early literacy activity event for young children. The libraries offer Books to Grow On kits for patrons to check out as well. These kits are a "storytime in a box" with a music CD, puppet, activity guide, and stories related to a theme of interest to preschool children. The Pittsburg Library also has a cabinet of early literacy toys. The library uses these toys to enhance programs for young children, and they allow parents and children to use them in the library anytime they visit. These toys make the library visit a bit more special for young children. 7. Flow will this project create, expand or enhance the literacy work you are doing? Many of the early literacy skills require parents to interact with their children — talking, singing, playing, and creating with their children. Hosting the child safety workshops and early literacy playtimes will provide another opportunity for parents to interact with their children, and thus practice early literacy skills. Having the workshops in the library also exposes participants to all the resources the library offers to support literacy and meet information needs.
