COSTA
COUNTY
FROM: John Cullen, County Administrator A awn
DATE: April 29, 2008
SUBJECT: Update State Capitol Exhibit 11110
SPECIFIC REQUEST(S) OR RECOMMENDATION(S) & BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION
RECOMMENDATION(S):,
AUTHORIZE the County Administrator, or designee, to update the County's State Capitol Exhibit.
(See Attachment A.)
FISCAL IMPACT:
Kirsten Stabler, a Senior at Campolindo High School, designed the exhibit for her Girl Scout Gold
Award Project. Theresa Onoda, a local artist, has done a painting of Mt. Diablo, which will be
enlarged for the background. The cost for materials to complete the exhibit will be approximately
$500, to be provided by the County Administrator's Office.
BACKGROUND:
In May 2006, 'Kirsten Stabler, then a sophomore at Campolindo High School, sent a letter to
Supervisor Uilkema asking if she could redesign the 1999 County display at the State Capitol for
her Girl Scout"Gold Award, Project. Office of Communications & Media Director Patricia Burke
was assigned to work with Kirsten as her Gold Award Advisor during the next two years. A project
proposal was submitted to the San Francisco Bay Area Girl Scout Association for its approval.
Once approved, Kirsten began to design the exhibit, collect photos, and develop the text with
input from the Board of Supervisors and the Coun y',s Chief Communications Officer.

The project theme is environmental protection and conservation, featuring the hills of Contra Costa.
The pictures and colors Kirsten is using will tie this overall theme together. A wood box the size of
the State Capitol display box will be created. Kirsten will build everything within this box, then slide
the box into the display case at the State Capitol when finished. The side walls are going to be
slightly angled to ',;make the display flow better. In the background, there will be an enlarged oil
painting of Mt. Diablo, painted by local artist Teresa Onoda. At the base of the exhibit there will be a
map of Contra Costa County. The map will be slanted slightly upwards for easy reading. At the top
of the exhibit there will be a long rectangular piece of glass with Contra Costa engraved on it in white.
Although the name of the county is at the top,of the display case, it is hard to see when viewing the
exhibit up close, so this additional name plate is important. The glass piece will be suspended .by
clear fishing line.
The main focus of the exhibit will be pictures. There will be eight 8"x8" photographs of important
areas in Contra Costa (see Attachment B), suspended at different levels. These photographs will be
mounted on dark green foam board and will be secured by clear plastic rods from the behind. Each
picture will have a small caption below, describing where the photograph was taken and its
significance withhi Contra Costa..
Since the current exhibit is nine years old, this is a good opportunity for a partnership between the
County and Girl Scouts to update the exhibit, allow Kirsten Stabler to complete her Gold Award
Project, and provide the citizens of Contra Costa County and visitors to the State Capitol with an
interesting and informative exhibit .
