County SPECIFIC REQUEST(S)OR RECOMMENDATION(S)&BACKGROUND JUSTIFICATION RECOMMENDATION(S): Approve and authorize the Health Services Director, or his designee (Jeff Smith,.M.D.), to execute on behalf of the County, Contract #26-563-1 with Total Renal Care, Inc., a corporation, in an amount not to exceed $210,000, to provide blood treatment services including dialysis. renal replacement and apheresis therapies for inmates at the County's Adult Detention Facility; for the period from February 1, 2008 through .January 31, 2010. In accordance with the terms of the agreement, County agrees to defend, indemnify and hold harmless the Contractor and its shareholders, affiliates, officers, directors, employees, and agents for, from and against any claim, loss, liability, cost and expense (including, without limitation, cost of investigation and reasonable attorney's fees) directly or indirectly relating to, resulting from or arising out of any action or failure to act by County and its staff. FISCAL IMPACT: This contract is funded 100% by.the Health Services Department Enterprise Fund I. BACKGROUND/REASON(S) FOR R.ECOMMENDATION(S): Historically; blood services have been very complicated to obtain for inmates at the County's Martinez Adult Detention Facility resulting in compromising the health of seriously ill inmates. This contract will allow inmates to receive blood services at the Martinez Detention Facility at a cost approximately 60% less than transporting inmates to outside vendors. On April 4, 2006, the Board of Supervisors approved Contract#26-563 with DVA Healthcare Renalcare, Inc. (now know as Total Renal Care, Inc.), for the period from April 1, 2006 through January 31, 2007, to provide blood services including, but not limited to, dialysis, renal replacement and apheresis therapies for inmates at the Martine: Detention Facility.
