FROM: Anne Cain, County Librarian - .;"• ;a Costa __ DATE: May 6, 2008 'A'couK�` County SUBJECT: APPROVE and AUTHORIZE the Contra Costa County Librarian to Apply for and Accept a Grant in the amount of$2,000 from the Lafayette Community Foundation for Lamorinda Reads! SPECIFIC REQUEST (S) OR RECOMMENDATION (S) & BACKGROUND AND JUST-IFICATION RECOMMENDATION APPROVE and AUTHORIZE the Contra Costa County Librarian to apply for and accept a Lalayette Community Foundation grant in the amount 01$2,000 to fund the purchase of books for Lamorinda Reads! (District IE) FINANCIAL IMPACT No matching funds are required. BACKGROUND Lafayette, Moraga and Orinda Libraries are joining together to launch the second annual tri-city reading program called Lamorinda Reads! It is modeled after similar successful CityReads programs in which residents are encouraged to read the same book and then celebrate the book through a variety of discussion and enrichment events. It provides a way for people to come together and find common ground for discussion and understanding. The grant provides funding for 250 copies of the selected title (Funny in Fcn•si: A Memoir- of'Gmwing ul) /rciniun in America by Firoozeh Dumas)to be available at the Library. Lamorinda Reads! will involve a broad spectrum of people and provide a variety of ways for people to get involved. Some people may choose to read the book and discuss it with their families, friends, and co-workers or in groups such as book clubs, service clubs, and other gatherings. Others may avail themselves of the Libraries' many program offerings that are both entertaining and educational, such as scholarly lectures, art exhibits, and a reception and author talk with Firoozeh Dumas. All programs are free to the public. The tri-community celebratory events are scheduled from October 13 to November 12, 2008.
