TO: BOARD OF SUPERVISORS - ;con fra FROM: William Walker,M.D., Health Services Director By: Jacqueline Pigg, Contracts Administrator � '; Costa DATE: March 18, 2008 —� Count SUBJECT: Approval of Interagency Agreement#28-782 with the Antioch Unified School District SPECIFIC REQUEST(S)OR RECOMMENDATION(S)&BACKGROUND JUSTIFICATION RECOMMENDATION(S): Approve and authorize the Health Services Director, or his designee (Wendel Brunner, M.D.) to execute on behalf of the County, Interagency Agreement #28-782 with the Antioch Unified School District, to pay County an amount not to exceed $14,900, for County to provide after-school activity and nutrition education programs, for the period from January 1, 2008 through June 30, 2008. FISCAL IMPACT: Approval of this agreement will result in an amount not to exceed $14,900 of funding for the Nutrition, Exercise and Wellness Kids (NEW Kids) Project. No County match required. CHILDREN'S IMPACT STATEMENT: This Community Wellness and Prevention Program supports the following Board of Supervisors' community outcome: "Children Ready For and Succeeding in School". Expected program outcomes include helping after-school providers be effective guides and role models in promoting healthy eating and increased movement & play for children attending the after-school programs. BACKGROUND/REASON(S) FOR.RECOMMENDATION(S): Childhood obesity, caused in part by the lack of physical activity and poor nutrition, is a serious problem in Contra Costa County. According to the 2002-03 Community Health Indicators Report 31% of Contra Costa County fifth graders are overweight. To address this issue the NEW Kids After-School Physical Activity Project is working in partnership with schools to increase children's physical activity and nutrition.
