HomeMy WebLinkAboutMINUTES - 03182008 - AJ.1 AJ A THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, CALIFORNIA Adjournment March 19,2008 On this day the Board of Supervisors adjourned this meeting in honor of Joop (Joseph)Peter Van Overveen Dec. 3, 1916 - March 3, 2008 Resident of Lafayette Joop (Joseph)Peter Van Overveen, 91, of Lafayette,passed away peacefully at John Muir Hospital in Walnut Creek, California, this past Monday; with family and close friends at his bedside. Joseph, commonly referred to as "Jop" or "Joppy" (pronounced Yop),was born in Amsterdam, Holland and as a child enjoyed sailing and developed a love for trains. He also lived in South Africa for a short time while his father was working in the Diamond Industry. His father appeared on an NBC Chet Huntley Newsreel in the 1950's regarding his cutting of the "Burton Diamond" worn by Elizabeth Taylor. The diamond was cut on a wheel designed by Joseph.e was instrumental in the City of Lafayette becoming incorporated. Jop regularly attended Lafayette City Council meetings -where he was known for his "lectern moments". He was an environmentalist long before it was fashionable - fore fronting the removal of a commercial helicopter landing pad that had impacted his quiet suburb in the 1960's. Jop was Director of the Lafayette Community Center from 1958- 1974, Chairman of the Board from 1960-1964, Lafayette City Recreation Commissioner from 1975-1982, active member in the Lafayette Historical Society, Lafayette Forward, the Lafayette Chamber of Commerce, and LaFrantics. For his efforts Joseph was voted Lafayette Citizen of the Year in 1962. Jop obviously loved his city and he loved his country. He was a very active founding member of the Lamorinda Democratic Club. He was a member of the National/California Society of Professional Engineers since 1959, a Life Fellow of the American Society for Mechanical Engineers (ASME), the Chair for the San Francisco Section of ASME from 1972-1973, an Executive Board Member for Region IX in ASME, on the ASME National Committee for Professional Ethics and Practice 1974-1979 and the ASME Rail Transportation Committee Chair in 1987. Jop was also a member of the Commonwealth Club of California since 1975, and member of the Railway & Locomotive Historical Society, Pacific Coast Chapter. Jop loved tinkering, inventing, fixing things, and enjoyed traveling with his wife. He spoke Dutch, German, French, and spoke English with a distinctive Dutch accent. Gabe Guzman, 25, died in Afghanistan on Saturday morning when his humvee hit an improvised explosive device, or IED, said his mother, Shelley Tucker. He lived in Concord for 10 years, and went to Oak Grove Middle School, Concord High School and later, Diablo Valley College. Tucker said he joined the Army four years ago because he thought it would lead him to a career, and he would be better able to take care of his 7-year-old daughter, Angela. Lee, Chronicle Staff Writer Thursday, March 13, 2008 (08-12) 16:16 PDT CONCORD--Gabriel Guzman joined the Army five years ago because he loved his country and wanted to improve his life.The Concord resident and father of a 7-year-old girl found honor serving at a time of war,friends said. The 25-year-old sergeant had spent more than a year in Afghanistan when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle Saturday,killing him,the Defense Department said Wednesday. Guzman,a graduate of Concord High School,was a forward observer assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 5o8th Parachute Infantry Regiment,82nd Airborne Division in Fort Bragg,N.C. He died north of Gholam Haydar Kala. "He was a strong person who always put others before himself," said a friend,Doreen Saima, 23. "He was kind-hearted and funny, a little sarcastic sometimes to the point where he came across as arrogant. But he was a good guy. He always told it like it was,and even if his friends were different, or didn't agree with him, he accepted it." Guzman joined the Army in July 2003 and was deployed to Afghanistan in February 2007. Members of his company said he was a dedicated and selfless soldier whose awards included the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart. "On a mission this past year while conducting a mountain clearance operation, Sgt. Guzman willingly gave the platoon RTO(radio telephone operator)his last bit of water knowing that we still had more than 4 kilometers to move," ist Sgt. Derek Gondek said in a statement. "That is just the type of man that he was.His utmost concern was always his paratroopers." In his spare time, Guzman enjoyed karate,snowboarding and listening to Metallica, his favorite band. Guzman wrote on his MySpace profile, "I have forgotten what it is to have a normal life.I walk the path laid before me for now. Soon I will choose where that path leads. I have had some hard lessons in my life.After everything, I have learned more about myself and what I believe in." He noted that he has been called arrogant,stubborn and overconfident. Born Oct. 17, 1982 in Salt Lake City, UT. He grew up and went to school in Concord, CA and considered it his home. He enjoyed martial arts, working out, snowboarding, video games, and joking around with his friends. At the age of 21 he joined the Army as a way to develop himself and support his young daughter, Angela. With a passion for life, he put everything into all that he did. He was strong, both physically and mentally, with a great sense of personal integrity. He was deeply loved and respected by family and friends,and will be greatly missed. Gabe is survived by his mother, Shelley Tucker, father, Reynaldo Guzman, two sisters, Heidi Guzman and Anni Watson, and his daughter Angela Haley Guzman.
