DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION FOR FACILITIES RENOVATION AND
..REPAIR
SPECIFIC REQUEST(S)OR RECOMMENDATION(S)&BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION
RECOMMENDATION:
APPROVE and AUTHORIZE the Employment & Human Services Director, or designee,
to execute an• agreement to accept funding from the California Department of Education
for facilities renovation and repair in an amount not to exceed $200,000 for the period
December 15, 2007 through June 30, 2010. (Districts I, II and V)
FISCAL IMPACT:
Funding will be appropriated into the Department's FY 2007-08 budget and included in
FY 2008-09 and FY 2009-2010. No County costs.

CHILDREN'S IMPACT STATEMENT:
The Community Services Bureau of the Employment & Human Services Department's
Head Start program supports three of Contra Costa County's community outcomes -
Outcome 1: "Children Ready for and. Succeeding in School," Outcome 3: "Families
that are Economically Self-sufficient," and, Outcome 4: "Families that are Safe, Stable,
and Nurturing." These outcomes are achieved by offering comprehensive services,
including high quality early childhood education, nutrition, and health services to low-
income children throughout Contra Costa County.
BACKGROUND:
On February:19, 2008 the Department was notified by the California Department of
Education of the approval of the Facilities Renovation and .Repair application for fiscal
year 2006-07. The State did not have sufficient.funds to offer funding that year, but
kept the application on file for subsequent budget years.
The $200,000 award is for the period December 15, 2007 through June 30, 2010.
Facility renovations will take place at the following Department Children Centers:
• Ambrose Center 3103 Willow Pass Road, Baypoint, CA
• Balboa Children's Center 1001 South 57th Street, Richmond, CA
• Bayo Vista Children's Center 2 California Street, Rodeo, CA
• Brookside Children's Center 847-B Brookside Dr., Richmond, CA
• Crescent Park Children's Center 5050 Hartnett Avenue, Richmond, CA
• Lake Children's Center 270012 1h Street, San Pablo, CA
• Las Deltas Children's Center 135 West Grove, Richmond, CA
• Verde.Children's Center 2000 Giaramita Avenue, North Richmond, CA
Approval of this agreement will allow the Department to complete facility renovations at
the above noted childcare centers.
