SPECIFIC REQUEST(S)OR RECOMMENDATION(S)&BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION RECOMMENDATION: ACKNOWLEDGE activities that celebrated May 2007 as Asthma Awareness Month. BACKGROUND: Asthma is an increasing problem in Contra Costa County affecting more than 159,000 (16%) of the residents. The asthma hospitalization rates for children living in Contra Costa (21.1 per 10,000) are higher than the rates for children living in California as a whole (18.1 per 10,000). Additionally, asthma is the number one cause of absenteeism due to a chronic illness among school-age children, contributes to missed workdays and lost productivity among adults and disproportionately affects residents of color and low-income. In response to this growing problem the Contra Costa Asthma Coalition was formed. It is a broad- based partnership of organizations and individuals whose mission is to strengthen Contra Costa County's ability to prevent asthma and improve the lives of people affected by asthma. This report provides information on the current status of asthma in Contra Costa County, a discussion on several environmental factors that impact the health of those with asthma and actions that individuals and policy makers can take to help reduce the negative effects of these factors and improve the lives of Contra Costa residents living with asthma.
