SUBJECT: REQUEST TO PURCHASE TWO ADDITIONAL VEHICLES FOR
THE CONTRA COSTA COUNTY FIRE PROTECTION DISTRICT

RECOMMENDATION:
APPROVE and AUTHORIZE the Purchasing Agent, or designee, to purchase two additional vehicles
for the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District.
FINANCIAL IMPACT
The Contra Costa County Fire Protection District is purchasing two additional vehicles for an
estimated purchase cost of $29,092. The purchase will be paid for with funds from the Contra Costa
County Fire Protection District Budget.
BACKGROUND
The Contra Costa County Fire Protection District is adding two compact pickups. One pickup will be
used to facilitate the Fire Hydrant Program. This program requires employees to go into the field and
do physical testing of fire hydrants. Currently the program is using a sedan and the car's trunk is not
practical to house and transport the testing equipment, plus water residue is ruining the trunk. The
second pickup will be used in Public Education to do field training on the proper usage of fire
extinguishers. Used and new extinguishers are now being transported in a sedan. Due to residual
powder from used extinguishers, the trunk of a sedan is not a good place to house and transport this
equipment.
In accordance with Administrative Bulletin No. 508: "County Vehicle and Equipment Acquisition and
Replacement Policy with Guidelines," approval is requested for the purchase of these vehicles.
Based on a review of the need for the new vehicle and consideration of alternative fueled vehicles,
the Fleet Manager recommends approval of this request. This request has been reviewed and
approved by the County Administrator for consideration by the Board of Supervisors.
