BACKGROUND/REASONS FOR RECOMMENDATION At the request of Supervisor Mary Piepho (District III), the Community Development Department is recommending that the matter relating to the proposed ordinance amending the zoning code to establish new size and location standards, sales restrictions, and other regulations governing roadside farm stands be continued to the Board of Supervisors meeting on Tuesday, June 5, 2007, at 1 p.m. The purpose for the continuation of the public hearing to June 5, 2007 is to allow time for staff to meet with representatives of the roadside farm stand operators and other interested parties to review their concerns on certain aspects of the proposed ordinance as recommended by the County Planning Commission. Over the years, we have been a part'of helping Contra Costa County maintain its quality of life while accommodating growth. Greenbelt Alliance respectfully urges the approval of the neve policies allowing and supporting agricultural sales and processing, general plan amendment(county file: GP#06- 0005) and zoning text amendment ordinance establishing standards and regulation for grower stands,farm stands, and farm markets in agricultural zoning districts (county file: ZT:#06-0003). It is important that Contra Costa County continues to support its rich agricultural heritage. Contra Costa County produces a wide variety of premium-quality fruits,nuts,vegetables and some value-added agricultural products including wine, olive oil and bakery items. However Contra Costa County has huge development pressures because of the continuous population growth of the Bay Area. The proposed ordinance is an effective tool that helps agriculture remain economically viable to the farmers and county. The proposed ordinance is the right solution to continue malting agriculture in.Contra Costa sustainable and it serves as a model for other communities.
