RECOMMENDATION:
ESTABLISH the classification of Supervising Sheriff s Aide (6Y1L-k)( represented):
ALLOCATE to salar- schedule V NT -1'61 (53,5179.368-4,3-50.74-5):
ADD two (2) Supervising Sheriffs :Vide positions (61 ILA) and
CANCEL two (2) Sheriffs aide (64V7) positions ='s 671and 3118

FISCAL IMPACT: The total annual cost of this action S2L')63 and within the Sheriff s budget_ funded i
from General Fund monies.
BACKGROUND: Currentiv. Sheriff Aides that are assigned to work in -14-hour detention facilities are
supervised by shift Sergeants: however_ Sergeants are also supervising a large number of Deputy-
Sheriffs in addition to other responsibilities. The current span of control for Sergeant.s assigned to
detention has proven to be inefficient and does not provide adequate supervision and evaluation to
Sheriffs aides assigned to detention.
CONSEQUENCE OF NEGATIVE ACTION: If this request is not approved.the Sheriff s Office will
continue to experience insufficient supen-ision of personnel in detention facilities.

• The Supervising Sheriffs Aide classification will be responsible for personnel. supervision,
performance evaluations and policy enforcement in detention facilities. �
• An external classification and compensation stud- was conducted with surrounding bay area
counties to determine the duties and responsibilities are appropriate salary for the proposed
classification. The results concluded that no bay area Count-,- agencies had comparable classes
with similar duties. minimum qualifications and skill sets.
• The requested Supervising Sheriff s Aid positions will be filled through and open and
competitive examination process.
• The total annual cost of this action S?1.365 and within the Sheriff s budget. funded from I
General Fund monies.
• The Supervising Sheriffs Aide wiII be designated as represented under the Deputy- Sheriffs
Association (DSA) bamainina unit. DSA will be notified of the cancellation of the Sheriff Aide
positions and the establishment of the new classification.
