volunteer and non-volunteer individuals and groups that have significantl}' contributed towards
reducing substance abuse in Contra Costa communities. (See list attached)

VOLUNTEER INDIVIDUAL AWARD
Karen Justice-Guard- District IV
Karen started "Safe Haven for Little People" in 1998 for abused and former drug-addicted women and their
children. In 1998. the non-profit organization became an official welfare-to-work program. which has
transitional housing and helps women gain job skills training so that they can become self sufficient and
support their children.
NON VOLUNTEER INDIVIDUAL AWARD
Luz Gomez- District I
With Luz's help, the West County Alcohol Policy Working Group has made a significant impact on the
alcohol outlets in West Count}-. She has worked veru hard on placing conditions on a problem outlet that the
community had requested so that alcohol could not be sold until after 10:00 A—M to protect children passing
bv. Luz' knowledge and interpersonal skills have greatly contributed to maximize the cooperation amongst
county departments that play a role in the process of granting alcohol licenses and enforcing policy
regulations.
NONVOLUNTEER INDIVIDtiAL AWARD
Christine Rhea- District II
Because Christine has "Gone the Extra dile", students in the Martinez Unified School District have been
exposed to alcohol, tobacco and drug prevention education. From speakers. grant preparation for the
purchase of curricular material. workshops. assemblies and poster contests. Chris has taken a small paper
task and turned it into a mission to prevent drug, alcohol and tobacco use in this district. Throuah her efforts.
the need to more TOWARD \O alcohol and drugs have become publicly acknowledged by 4000 plus
students. parents and the school board.
NON VOLUNTEER INDIVIDtiAL AWARD
Officer Scott Yox- Countvwide
Officer Yox is the public affairs officer for the California Highway Patrol Contra Costa area office. Since his
assignment. he has taken seriously the responsibility of increasing drug and alcohol abuse awareness. He is
commonly in the high school campuses assisting with the Even-Fifteen Minutes program. which focuses on
the impact of drinking and driyina. He is also very involved in the Right Turn.' and Srart Srnarr programs.
The Right Turn Program focuses on the choices and the consequences. particularly the consequence of i
driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, or being with a driver that is under the influence.
NON VOLUNTEER GROUP AWARD
Pueblos del Sol- District IV
This alcohol and other drugs residential program is the only one that serves Spanish-speaking residents in
contra Costa County. The program welcomes addicts and their families into the process of recovery. The

program utilizes a cultural and family based approach to recovery. "Recovery in my Language- Healing for
my People"is a phrase that Pueblos del Sol use as they help families live healthier and sober lives.
YOUTH LEADERSHIP AWARD
Beyond the Youth and Youth In Power- District V and District I
Students from Bay Point Beyond the Youth at Riverview Middle School teamed with Youth In Power at
Carquinez diddle School in Rodeo to create a video and illustrate the difficult concept of environmental
prevention and highlight the impact of underage drinking. The students started by surveying more than ?00
of their peers, and found that 65% of them can access alcohol from their home environment, frequently with
the help of older siblings and friends. Folioxving the results, the students designed and led a campaign called
"Lock It Up" to educate parents and adults about limiting youth access to alcohol.
YOUTH LEADERSHIP GROUP AWARD
Discovering the Reality of Our Community- (DROC) District I
This group of Richmond youth sent invitations to 15 community based organizations, and together with their
peers and community members removed AOD paraphernalia and trash. Afterwards. they celebrated with a
Block Pam called "Show Richmond Watcha Made Of' to increase awareness about alcohol and other drug
issues and build community pride. They organized entertainment. fed the neighborhood and spoke about their
real life struggles with drug and alcohol abuse in their lives. "Show Richmond Watcha Made Of' was the
work of DROC El Cerrito high school teens who worked hard for 5 months to plan and organize this event.
They focus on improving the community through alcohol and drug prevention.
SPECI_AL AWARD
Dr. Fred Von Stieff- District IV
He is the Medical Director for the Center for Recovery at John Muir. Dr. Von Stieff is responsible for testing
union members for drugs and alcohol use and making treatment recommendations. Over the years, he has
detoxified many individuals and contributed to their recover-. Dr. Stieff has volunteered his time to the
Advisory Board as a speaker or participating in the Board's television programs geared at educating the
public about important AOD issues.
POSTHUMOUS AWARD
Beverly«"are- District I
Beverly was a CCC employee for the West County_ Volunteer and Emergency Services Program when she
died last February 8. 2001.. She worked tirelessly to normalize the lives of children -who are often affected by
drugs and alcohol use in their families. She spearheaded the annual Toys for Tots drive in Nest Contra
Costa. overseeing the distribution and collection of toys. Ms. Ware's efforts Twee not limited to the Toys for
Tots drive. Recovering women also received clothing donations from the Ready to Work Closet program.
Her efforts bolstered the client's confidence and gave them the vision to see beyond their addiction.

Naomi P. Smith- District V i
Naomi began working with Ljima at the Rector- in -larch of 1990. During her employment with t:jima the
past 1- rears she has occupied multiple positions as a counselor. coordinator. etc. As a dedicated I.jima
employee. she has worked directly with the Executive Director to open 4 facilities: L:jima West. La Casa
Ljima, L;jima East. and the Rosemary- Corbin House. 'Naomi has dedicated her life to help individuals
recover from AOD addiction. One of her mantras is: "Each One... Reach One... Teach One."

Cheryl Barrett- District F
From the beginning of her recovery process. Cheryl has been a role model and positive influence for the past
nears. After completing residential treatment and reuniting with her famil_�. Cheryl set her goals to help
others. She is now a Parent Partner with Children and Famil Services, she is open and willing to listen. But
more than listening. she has put into practice the attitudes and behaviors which emanate recover-at it's best.
CERTIFICATE OF MERIT
Katrina Howard-District I
Katrina has been one of the DEUCE teachers in the contra costa adult school for ten _-ears. In that role, she
teaches to an average of 30 students each day at the Rest Countv Detention Facilitv and has a tremendous
impact on hundreds of inmates to promote recovery and healthy lifestyle choices. Additionally for the past
several rears. els. Howard has been working as the Transition Specialist. This position was created to
support inmatesrequests for assistance. in order to positively have a successful transition back to the
community. which includes referrals to treatment programs.

PSA Group
DROC's PSA group used media as a venue for changing the environmental influences of }young people regarding
alcohol and other drugs. They° created a three pan series of Public Services Announcements that focused on driving
under the influence.teen alcohol poisoning. alcohol and domestic violence.
