HomeMy WebLinkAboutMINUTES - 04032007 - C.31 C� C . 3t IN THE MATTER OF CELEBRATING RESOLUTION NO. 2007/169 THE LIFE AND CONTRIBUTIONS OF LOVIE LEE MCINTOSH Whereas, Lovie McIntosh had a long history working for the betterment of people, neighborhoods, and communities in Contra Costa County, and Whereas, Lovie was born in Woodson, Arkansas in 1919 and moved to Richmond, California in 1943 with her beloved husband Jewell;and Whereas, Lovie and Jewell opened the Central Variety Store in North Richmond, later starting a family landscaping and janitorial business, Instant Service Company, which was awarded one of BART's first landscaping contracts;=arid . Whereas, Lovie McIntosh returned to school,, receiving her Bachelor:.. of Science degree from Hayward State University and;-her Master's`'in Psychology,from'John F. Kennedy University :w when she was 60 years; and Whereas, Lovie McIntosh .,co-founded the nonprofit People";Pledged. for Community Progress (PPCF), where she..was the Executive Director. She also served as a Community Component Coordinator for the California Center Satellite Project at California-Hayward State University, and :workedas the Community Research" Liaison and Project Staff Supervisor for the University of,California's Richmond Community Development-=Research Project.=She was a consultant in the Teacher Orientation Program for the.Richmond Uiufied"School�,;District and aft;Invitational.Lecturer at University California Berkeley's School of Social Wo and. Whereas,,Lovie McIntosh:was.a=long time community,activist, an—'a':fosterparent to many troubled youth, and Whereas;Lovie wasa lifetime member of the,Parent Teachers' Association and the'NAACP and the recipient of rriany:awards,'including the.San Francisco Examiner's "The Most Distinguished Robe t Cainpbells Francisco Wo man of the Foundation" ar, City and Co ns�emoblthMSanb Franc sc o a B Lee and Board of Supervisor's Commendation, and the Guardians of Jus"'ce Disfinguishecl CitizenAward; and Whereas, Lovie McIntosh,:wha passed away on March 20,,,'2007 will truly be missed=by'her devoted children, grandchildren, anI'lld great=grandchildren, and warmly remembered for:her committed and inspirational"work on behalf of the::people: of Gontra Costa ,.County and the San Francisco Bay Area, NOW THEREFORE 'BE IT RESOLVED, that the Board>;of Supervisors of Contra Costa County honors the dedicated life of Lovie'Mc ' osh who has left in body but not in spirit and declares March 28, 2007 as"L;o 'e.Mcln„ sh,I ay7 in'Contra Costa.County.
