SPECIFIC REQUEST (S) OR RECOMMENDATION (S) & BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION RECOMMENDATION APPROVE and AUTI-IORIll the Contra Costa County Librarian to APPLY for and ACCEPT for the Lafayette Conununity Library, a Lafayette Community Foundation grant in the amount of$2,000. (District IV) FINANCIAL IMPACT No matching hinds are required. BACKGROUND Lafayette, Moraga and Orinda Libraries are joining together to launch the first annual tri-city reading program called L,amorinda Reads! It is modeled after similar successful city-reads programs in which our residents are encouraged to read the same book and then celebrate the book through a variety of discussion and enrichment events. It provides a way for people to come together and find common ground for discussion and understanding. This grant funding enables the purchase of 200 copies of the selected title(Down to a Soundless Sea by Thomas Steinbeck) to be available at the Library and distributed at coffee shops, businesses and local community organizations. Lamorinda Reads! will involve a broad spectrum of people and provide a variety of ways for people to get involved. Some people may choose to read the book and discuss it with their families, friends, and co-workers or in private groups such as book clubs, service clubs, and other gatherings. Others may avail themselves of the Libraries' many program offerings that are both entertaining and educational, such as scholarly lectures (history and orientation of Big Sur County and Monterey Peninsula), storytelling, art exhibits depicting the history and culture of turn-of-the-century Northern California, and a reception and author talk with 'Phomas Steinbeck. All programs are free to the public. Our tri-community celebratory events are scheduled from September 17 to October 25, 2007.
