AS SEXUAL ASSAULT AWARENESS MONTH
IN CONTRA COSTA COUNTY
WHEREAS,in California there were 9,345 forcible rapes reported last year;and
WHEREAS, there were 197 forcible rapes reported in Contra Costa County urn the same year with
an increasing number affecting adolescents; and
WHEREAS, it is estimated by the Bureau of Justice Statistics that over 74'//o of rapes were never
reported to police;and
WHEREAS, women, children and men of all ethnic..and;.,:economic.:backgrounds are victims o
sexual assault, and itis.estimated that one in three women, one in four girls, one in six boys,
and one in eleven lnei .�vil1 be victims at least once iii thein lifetimes;and
WHEREAS, women, children,. and.. men suffer multiple types of sexual violence ince using
acquaintance rape, stranger rape; sexual assault by an intiinate partner, gang rape, incest, serial
rape, ritual abuse, sexual harassn.lent, child sexual nlolestation, prostitution"pornography, and
stalking; and
WHEREAS, women, children, and men in Contra Costa Have the right to be safe fron-1 sexual
violence its their houses, at school, at work, and oil.the streets;and
WHEREAS, C:olnnnlnity Vii�lerlce Solutions is committed to ending sexual .violence in .Contra
Costa and provides essential victim; Sexual Assault Response Team, and prevention services
to 111eml)ers of our CO111t11u111tv; and
WHEREAS, it Is Our responsibility to support tape sutvivors by treating theni. witls digniq
compassion;:gild respcct,.and to hold perpetrators responsibic for these::violent accts and
WHEREAS, the State. of California recognizes April as Sexual Assault Awareness Month,-
THEREFORE,
oIltli;THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED THAT the .Board of SupelVisors..:of Contra::Costa County
designates fiat the Month of.April as Sexu,,il Assatllt,l. wareness :Month..id.0 ontra Costa; and
be it further
RESOLVED that the Board.of Supervisors reaffirms..its comniifthent to addressing the issues of
rape and sexual assault in out County by acknowledging the :work` of Comniunit�7 Violence
Solutions and it.s..Rape Crisis::prograrn in its efforts to stop these hotrific crirnes against our
citizens.
