BACKGROUND
Description of Service
The BIG READ grant is an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with the Institute of Museum
and Library Science. The purpose of the BIG READ grant is to revitalize the role of literature in American popular culture,
by encouraging one community to read one classic novel. The grant provides funding for the purchase of 1,000 copies of
the selected title (Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury) to be available at the Library and distributed at coffee shops,
businesses and local community organizations. The grant also provides promotional and educational materials for the
month long series of community and library programming related to the book and national media support. Concord
Community Library, in partnership with City of Concord, will offer: a `Kick off' event during Banned Book week; a classic
Science Fiction Film series for teens; 10 book discussion events around the City; a Spanish film series at Monument
Futures; a lecture and panel discussions on censorship; a family story telling series, a showing of the film at the Brenden
Theatre in Concord, and possible tie-ins with local 9°i grade reading assignments and classroom discussions. Concord
Community Library will also create an on-line Wiki for community wide information sharing about the book and events.
