On this date the Board of Supervisors adjourned this meeting in memory of Army Pfc.
James J. Coon. Mr. Coon was a 22 year resident of Walnut Creek.
James Coon died Wednesday in Balad, Iraq, when an explosive device detonated near his
vehicle, according to the Department of Defense. Coon's bravery and selflessness in the
earlier attack put him under consideration for a Bronze Star. He ran from his vehicle
without protection or a weapon and put tourniquets on two wounded soldiers,who died in
the attack along with four others in the unit.
Coon was a punter on Las Lomas High School's 2002 championship football team. He
graduated in 2003 and attended Diablo Valley College in Pleasant Hill before enlisting in
the Army. He was assigned to the 1"Battalion, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 2°a Brigade, 1St
Cavalry Division, in Fort Hood, Texas, and was deployed to Iraq in October.

WALNUT CREEK, Calif.- Army Pfc. James J. Coon had
braved danger before when, less than three weeks
ago, he risked his life trying to save two soldiers from
his unit who were wounded in a bomb attack.
Coon, 22, of Walnut Creek died Wednesday in Balad,
Iraq, when an explosive device detonated near his
vehicle, according to the Department of. Defense.
Coon's bravery and selflessness in the earlier attack
put him under consideration fora Bronze Star. He

I had hoped this day would never come for any of us,but sadly it has.
We lost one of our own today, I received a call this evening from Lori and
James Coon telling me that they lost their 22 year old son,James,He was
deployed to Iraq in October of last year.Lori and James joined our group In
Novamber.
A few of us visited with the family tonight.They expressed their
deepest thanks for your support and love,but they are not ready to
have visitors or phone calls at this time.They would appreciate cards
and notes of encouragement for now.Thair address is: Lod

Please give this family your love,support and prayers as they go

DoD Identifies Army Casualty
The Department of Defense announced today the death of a soldier who was supporting
Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Pfc.James J. Coon,22, of Walnut Creek, Calif., died April 4 in Balad, Iraq, of
wounds suffered when in improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle. Coon
the 1 st Battalion, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Brigade, I st Cavalry
Division, Fort Hood, Texas.
