FISCAL IMPACT: Approval of this application will result in $265,080 of funding from the CIWMB for the Environmental Health Waste Tire Enforcement Program. No County funds required. BACKGROUND/REASON(S)FOR RECOMMENDATION(S): California has more registered vehicles than any other state. As a result, approximately 40.2 million reusable and waste tires are generated each year. About 1.5 million waste tires are already stockpiled throughout.the state, posing a health and safety risk for the public. The California Integrated Waste Management Board (CIWMB) is dedicated to finding new uses for these valuable resources, and to work in cooperation with local governments, such as Contra Costa County (CCC), industries, and the public towards reaching their goals. With this funding, CCC will be able to monitor and reduce illegal waste tire practices, educate and enforce proper waste tire management throughout the county, assist in reducing potential vector problems and preventing tires fires and otherwise protecting public health and safety. Three certified and sealed copies of the Board Order should be returned to the Contracts and Grants Unit.
