FISCAL IMPACT: The total annual costs associated with this action are $131,300,with a total cost this fiscal year is $65,000. However,this position is 100%funded by the California Corrections Standards Authority Mentally Ill Offender Crime Reduction Grant. Therefore,there are no net county general fund costs associated with this action. BACKGROUND: In order to staff the Adult Mentally Ill Offender program,the Probation Department is requesting an additional position in the classification of Deputy Probation Officer 111. In order to run this program, for which 100%of the funding is provided by a grant from the California Corrections Standards Authority, an additional Deputy Probation Officer III is required. CONSEQUENCE OF NEGATIVE ACTION: If this action is not approved, the Probation Department will not have the appropriate staffing to run the Adult Mentally Ill Offender Program. The grant is for the period January 2007 through June 2008. The purpose of the grant is to reduce recidivism of mentally ill offenders. The lead agency for the grant is the Contra Costa County. Sheriff s Department and on October 24, 2006 the Board of Supervisors authorized them to accept funding from the Corrections Standards Authority in the amount of$1,500,000. Fiscal Impact: The grant will fully fund one full-time Deputy Probation Officer. Consequence of Negative Action: An opportunity to provide enhanced supervision to mentally ill offenders for no additional county cost will be missed.
