REASONS FOR RECOMMENDATIONSIBACKGROUND:
For several years the County has contracted with registries to provide temporary medical professionals to
assist Contra Costa Regional Medical Center and Contra Costa Health Centers during peak loads,
temporary absences, and emergency I situations. There is a nationwide nursing and healthcare staff
shortage, and in spite of persistent efforts to recruit nurses and other healthcare staff, the Department has
experienced great difficulty in filling Zany vacant positions. Therefore, the Department has had to rely
heavily on the registry services in order to provide quality-nursing care for patients.
On September 27, 2005, the Board of Supervisors approved Contract #26-458-5 with Access Nurses to
provide temporary nursing services, as requested by the Department, for the period from September 1,
2005 through August 31,2006.
I
Due to an increase in temporary absences and a shortage of nurses, County has requested and
Contractor has agreed to provide. additional temporary nursing services to cover critical areas at
Contra Costa Regional Medical Center. Approval of Contract Amendment Agreement #26-458-6
will allow the Contractor to provide)additional temporary nursing coverage services through August
31, 2006.
