IN THE MATTER OF CONGRATULATING RESOLUTION NO. 2006/303
SYLVESTER GREENWOOD
ON HIS RETIREMENT FROM
THE WEST CONTRA COSTA
UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT
WHEREAS, Sylvester Greenwood graduated from Richmond's Harry. Ells High School in 1962, and
spent one year at San Francisco State University before transferring to Contra. Costa Community
College; and
WHEREAS, At Contra Costa, Sylvester Greenwood played football on a winning team, landing a football
scholarship to Fresno State University, where he played until he was drafted by the New Orleans
Saints in 1967; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Greenwood played for the,NFL fox two years,'spending off-seasons attending San
r
Francisco State,wh...ere-he earned 1 BA m physical education and,history; and
WHEREAS, When Mr Gieeiiwood's'piofessional football w
career as cut short by an injury, he returned
to his home` com nu iity, wo ki g as a counselor's :.aide at Downe> Junior High School in
Richiinond; and
WHEREAS,;,Mr. Greenwood_passionately enjoyed working with young students and schools, and went
on to earn a+teacher's credential, stayingin his home town,,to teach physical education and history
at Harry Ells for three years; and
WHEREAS;;Sylvester Greenwood took a brief break from the classroom butnot--from education to earn
a n aster's�&e ree and-adiririnistrative credential in educational adnumstration,from the University of
San Francisco, tlieii returned to die.-Richmond sehools. as dean of students atIli`Vi

WHEREAS, Mr Greenwood held several Yotl er adn-Am- §nation posts un ahechstrict,including instructional
vice principal at Portola"Junior High,..principal of Downer Junior High, and principal of Kennedy

district office, where he was appointed assistant superintendent{and later deputy superintendent;

WHEREAS, In addition,to hands-on work in the schools° MW"`.Gr"e' e`n- -',-v`o65dhas been active in numerous
organizations mcluding,the Richmond Poh Actty t5r League, fli6Richmond Exchange Club, the
Richmond Education Fund, the Richmond Association of School Administrators, and the Berkeley
Mount Zion Baptist Church;,avid
WHEREAS, After working tirelessly and passionately for the West Contra Costa Unified School District
for nearly 40 years, Mr. Greenwood retired this year;
NOW, THEREFORE,,BE IT RESOLVED that the County'of Contra Costa Board of Supervisors
honors Sylvester.Greenwood for his significant contribution to the youth, schools, and
communities of West Contra Costa C nty, and congratulates him on his retirement.
