FISCAL IMPACT: Reimbursement from the Contra Costa County Property Damage Self-Insurance Fund for costs paid to the Department of Public Works. BACKGROUND: In October 2003, the Rodeo Pedestrian Bridge was damaged when a vehicle attempted to cross the bridge. This incident resulted in failed decking creating a threat to pedestrians. Recognizing a potential dangerous condition, the bridge was closed to pedestrians. Subsequent barricades and fencing were vandalized and failed to keep the public off the bridge. The Department of Public Works arranged for a study by Quincy Engineering. Their structural engineers recommended removal and construction of a new bridge. The bridge was replaced in October 2004. The original vandalism created a first party loss for property damage. The self-insured retention is $50,000. The Department of Public Works should be commended for their loss prevention efforts and reimbursed for funds already expended.
