The following persons presented testimony: Rollie Katz, Business Manager, PEU, Local 1, states management is telling employees that if they participate in any labor action, they will be let go. Also reminding Supervisors to again look at the budget, consider cutting some management positions, rather than line positions. Mr. Laye passed away at home, May 5, 2006. John Edward Laye Resident of Orinda John Edward Laye passed away suddenly on May 5, 2006. John is survived by his loving wife of fifty plus years, Jeanne; his son, John Russell; daugher, Linda Fischer; son-in-law, Matthew; grandchildren, Lisa and Brian Fischer. John was born in Santa Monica, CA, on May 26, 1933. His mother was the writer, Evelyn Young, and his father Theodore M. Ley. John and Jeanne met as freshmen at Beverly Hills High School and began a long wonderful relationship soon after. They married after John received his Naval wings in December 1955. John obtained a BA from the Naval Postgraduate School and his BS from USC. He was a member of the Junior Deputies in LA County and a radio operator for Search and Rescue teams. John spent summers lifeguarding at Venice and Long Beach beaches. He served on the Lake Champlain(the last straight deck carrier in the Navy), in P5M and Anti-submarine warfare squadrons. He was the Air Control Officer on the USS Ranger ported here in Alameda. John's final billet was five years in Washington DC where he led the development of the new mirror carrier landing system. In Washington John spent part of his free time as a volunteer captain of the Burke Rescue Squad for the fire department. He has numerous badges from the many fire departments he supported throughout his career. After retiring to Orinda, John became the Emergency Medical Coordinator for Solano County for five years-before starting Contingency Management Consultants. In this last life he taught for over twenty years for the Federal Emergency Management Agency; is professor emeritus of the UC Berkeley Program for Disaster Recovery;taught classes in other universities around the country. He wrote the definitive practical book on preparing companies and governmental agencies to be prepared to handle all type of emergencies and disasters, "Avoiding Disaster." John has been a mentor to many new consultants in his field of expertise and continued to offer help and advise whenever asked. John is the ultimate volunteer for our schools and our cities, currently serving on one of Orinda's Volunteer Committees. John has awards from the Navy, the Fire Departments, the City of Orinda, and many others for his volunteer and work related activities. John will be missed by all who knew him. Pfc. Benjamin T. Zieske joined the Army last year and arrived in Iraq in July, according to the Associated Press. He was patrolling on foot Wednesday when the improvised explosive device detonated in Kirkuk, Iraq. Zieske was assigned to the 1 st Battalion, 327th Infantry Regiment, 1 st Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division out of Fort Campbell, Ky. He is survived by his mother, Laurie Zieske, of Concord, and his father, Robert Zieske. THIS IS A MATTER FOR RECORD PURPOSES ONLY NO ACTION WAS TAKEN a 4• r 5 O ri-I w 41 x to oa z z v. 0 F �o �, 31. -� O' ptNIA4� C � CA ` dw Adjournment THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, CALIFORNIA Adjournment May 16, 2006 On this day the Board of Supervisors adjourned this meeting in honor of a Resident of Lafayette George Spyros Chilimidos died peacefully in Pleasant Hill at the age of 75. "Chillie" served the City of Pleasant Hill for 24 years as an officer with the Pleasant Hill Police Department. He was the first Pleasant Hill police officer hired in 1970 and thus wore badge number 1 during his tenure. Prior to joining PHPD, he was an officer with Sausalito Police Department (1968-1969) and a reserve officer with Oakland Police Department(1963-1968). He leaves his beloved and devoted wife of 49 years, Janice; his sons and daughters-in-law David(Nancy), Darren (Maria) and Daryl (Elizabeth); his grandchildren Anastasia, Alexandria, Stephen, Dominic, Sofia, and Christopher; and many loving nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. He is predeceased by his brother, Dr. Robert S. Chilimidos, and his parents, Spyros and Marika Chilimidos. George was a graduate of Oakland Technical High School and Diablo Valley College, and served in the U.S. Air Force for 4 years. He was a former president of the California Crime Prevention Officers Association, a board member of the Criminal Justice Planning Committee for the Neighborhood Safety Project, and worked with many other agencies devoted to public safety. George was a gregarious and exuberant individual who touched many people's lives. He will be remembered for his commitment to family, his strong work ethic, and his dedication to the youth of Pleasant Hill.
