Bush proclaimed May as Asian Pacific American Heritage Month; and WHEREAS, May is recognized as Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month to mark two dates: The first Japanese immigrants arrived in the United States on May 7, 1843, and the building of the transcontinental railroad,part of which came.th ough Contra Costa County, had many tracks laid by Chinese workers and was completed on>May 10, 1869,,and WHEREAS, California' s the site:of the first recorded arrival of Asians ili mainland America when Filipino sailot&.of.the Spanish galleon Nuestra'Seriora de Esperanza landed at Morro Bay on October 18;1587; and.., WHEREAS, in the late"19t" century, Chinese laborers helped build the a evees,protecftng the islands of the San Joaquin-Sacramento Delta; and WHEREAS, during 11 the first half of the 20th century,Japanese grid Fihpmo farmers andffarm workers __ were a"vital part of the'agricultural heritage of Contra Cosfa County,and . 1 WHEREAS, .Contra Costa.County is home to over 109,000 people of Asran'"and PacrficiIslander descent, or;about,l2 percent,of the County's.population , representing many nations and etMucities, each wrth'its,own cultute, heritage language'and'experrence, ennchrng the quali of hfe of this county; and WHEREAS; "the talent:and hard work of Asian/Pacific Islanders conttrrues to add to the success and ;•..� prosperity of our County, State-and Natton,"and they have helped shape Ameuca's character and ..� identify throu&their str'o"ng values,love offat and camtntttiient to community; y ..
